Welcome to the Gibsons Landing Salmon Run

Vancouver has its Orcas, Calgary has its Cows, and Toronto has its Moose. Gibsons has its Salmon Run.

fish heads!

The Salmon Run is part of the Gibsons Landing Salmon Festival to be held on Saturday, September 6th, 2008. The second year of this community art project promises to give residents and businesses a chance to pull out all the artistic stops and let Gibsons' creativity shine.

Anyone can sponsor a fish. For a $20 "tag" fee you get a 4 ft. plywood salmon ready for decoration. When you return your decorated fish, the salmon becomes the property of the Gibsons Landing Business Association.

Proceeds from the sponsorship and the auction of your fish go to the GLBA which partners with many community organizations throughout the year to create not only a stronger business environment, but also opportunities for art, education, and environmental stewardship.

The salmon will be judged and then hang for five days before the festival at Gift of the Eagle Gallery and at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery. On Saturday, September 6th, they will be displayed along the wharf, running down one side and up the other.

There will be a silent auction of most of the fish on the wharf Saturday from 11am until 4pm. The most artistic fish will be sold at a live auction during a wine and appetizers soirée at the former Club from 5:30 to 7pm. Jackson Davies of Beachcomber fame will serve as the auctioneer.

To order a fish...

2008 details and order form will be posted later.

Your $20.00 payment by cash or cheque made payable to the Gibsons Landing Business Association buys your tag.

Guidelines

Here are a few guidelines we'd like you to follow. First of all, be creative and have fun decorating. Almost all materials are welcome but we'd like you to keep a few things in mind.

  1. Be weather worthy These salmon will hang in September and there just might be a bit of weather. Crepe paper may not make it through a windy or misty day.
  2. Be art worthy. Your beautiful salmon will be auctioned at Gift of the Eagle gallery during four days after the Salmon Festival. Keep in mind that collectors may be looking for a special piece for the mantle or a unique garden ornament.
  3. Be environmentally Friendly. We realize that not all the material you use will be "green", but please fasten your decorations well, so we don't have paper, plastic, or metal going astray.
  4. Be aware of our hands. Many people will handle your fish after you return it. We have to judge it, hang it, remove it, and hang it for auction. We'd appreciate it if you don't use sharp objects.
  5. Beware of advertising. Blatant advertising such as "Eat at Joe's" will not be accepted. However, subliminal advertising is welcome and appreciated. So be clever.

Fish will be judged by a panel of prestigious art judges, fish experts, and forensic scientists... Of course not. It'll just be a bunch of us Gibsonites who like to have fun!
